#TransformationTuesday of Sorts

My last blog post was about being strong, not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well. Since writing that post, I have really reflected on where I am currently in my life, and how that compares to the person I used to be.

I’ve written before about my fitness journey, how my life changed since I became a Beachbody coach 2.5 years ago, and how I’ve grown throughout the process. But I don’t really talk much about the person I was even before then.

Growing up, I remember being very shy. I was a smart, quiet girl who had good grades in school without needing to study, but had very few friends. I had no idea how to talk to kids my age¬†and often felt like an outcast. I was the very definition of a “painfully shy” child. Assignments that required speaking in front of the class made me turn beet red and sweat buckets. I came very close to having a panic attack in college when I had to give my first speech.

Even into young adulthood, I continued being socially awkward. I wanted friends, and I had a few who were close to me, but I was never comfortable in new situations or when meeting new people. My self-esteem was so low that when one boy gave me attention, I wasn’t sure whether to grab on for dear life or run far away. I married my high school sweetheart and had my daughter fairly young. When our marriage went sour, I had an extremely difficult time getting out of the relationship. I struggled with anxiety and depression, and didn’t see value within myself. I was an emotional wreck without the strength I needed to pick myself up and move toward a more positive place. I hit rock bottom. I tried to take my own life because I truly felt that my daughter would be better off without me. Luckily, I failed.

I went to therapy for a year, and felt like I had some strength and control of my life. I moved on, dated a string of men, and tried to find someone to be my “other half.” I needed attention and needed to feel like I was loved and wanted. While I knew that I needed to be mentally well on my own, I still couldn’t stand to be alone. Eventually, I met my second husband and we got married. I was jealous, anxious, and untrusting of him… mostly due to my own insecurities. I never felt pretty enough, smart enough, thin enough, or good enough. I ended up in therapy again, and tried to really practice the healthy thinking that I knew I needed. But it was always a struggle to keep my mind in a positive place.

Then I found Beachbody, and my life slowly changed.

Today, I stayed at home while my kids were in school. I practice a new PiYo workout because I am teaching fitness classes in two separate gyms on Thursday. I created a video to share on social media of me – in my perfectly imperfect body – doing a portion of a workout. I supported my online challengers and lead my team of coaches. I applied to be a contributor to a running blog as a guest writer. Sure there was a tiny voice that said I may not be good enough and I may not be the type of writer they are looking for…but I applied anyway. Just a few days ago I broadcasted my first ever Periscope — seriously?! Live video!! Of a workout! What if I messed up, what if I did it wrong… and in the end…so what. What if I didn’t?

Posting videos of myself online, teaching fitness classes in 4 gyms/studios, flying to LA to be filmed for a P90X workout, training for a bikini competition, being an entrepreneur and running my own coaching business, applying to be an ambassador for a local marathon (and being selected!), and continually taking risks in my life… These are things that make me emotional when I really think about what I’m doing right now. This was NOT the type of person I was, and isn’t even CLOSE to the type of person I ever thought I would be. There are times I get scared, times I get nervous and sweaty and red in the face, and times I get the urge to crawl under the blankets and hide because I am afraid.

And then I look at how far I’ve come, and I hold my head up, and run straight forward into my future. Because I am strong and I am worth it.

Exclusive P90X3 Test Group!!

Happy Friday! I hope everyone is staying warm today. We have a snow day here (yay no school!), so it has been a morning full of snuggles…and yes, I’m still in my pajamas! I’m not feeling at all bad about it though; my muscles are sore from yesterday’s workout, and besides, we all deserve a “snow day” with our exercise routines once in a while, right?

The latest Beachbody program, Focus T25, came out in July. I was still very much in the beginning of my transformation, and had a lot of work to do with my body. I got that program because workouts were only 25 minutes. And for me, that is completely doable. I couldn’t pass it up, especially when I was about to start back teaching full time. I started a T25 test group with a small number of women (and one husband), and we stuck together for the entire program. We drank our Shakeology, followed the nutrition plan that was included, and did our workouts. No excuses. In just 10 weeks, I had amazing results. I actually didn’t even really lose weight, but my body CHANGED.

Focus T25 Results!

First off, I need to be honest about some things. I completed this program, but I wasn’t always excited about it. I LOVED that it was an intense workout that only took 25 minutes per day, but sometimes I just didn’t want to do it. Most days I did. A few days I had to miss because of vacation or waking up late. But I will say that 90-95% of the time, I did my workouts as prescribed. I modified A LOT. Especially in the beginning, I couldn’t hang with Shaun. I had to stick with Tania and do a lot of modified moves. I couldn’t jump as much as I was supposed to. It did get easier, and I was able to modify less by the end of Alpha (and then Beta slammed me!), but even some things like the pike-ups never did get easy for me.

I also didn’t follow the nutrition plan very strictly. I tried a lot of the foods in the fast track guide and in the nutrition guide, but we ate a lot of our typical foods at home. We are pretty clean eaters, but I ate more breads and sweets (hellllooo birthdays!) and restaurant foods than I should’ve. There was also a beer or (twenty)two during those 10 weeks that I probably could’ve done without. But life happens, right?

So as I went through the program, I began to get discouraged when the scale didn’t really move. But we all know the scale is a dirty liar (even though I went as far as to buy a new one that I thought would lie less), so I took my measurements often. Not much change. It’s frustrating when you feel like you’re giving your all for 10 weeks and you aren’t seeing numbers move. A little bit of movement, but not much.

So I wasn’t very on-the-ball with getting these pictures taken. I didn’t take them right away when I finished T25. It wasn’t until a week later when I was ready to start Insanity that I decided it was time to take pics. Because I was determined to get the results I wanted with Insanity, and I wanted proof that I had made some changes to my body.

Tonight, I decided to upload my pics so I could submit them to Beachbody in order to get my free Focus T25 t-shirt (who doesn’t love a free shirt?!). After everything I’ve just said, you can imagine my surprise…MY SHOCK…when I looked at my pictures. I had forgotten what my before pictures looked like, and I really didn’t think I even looked that much different now. I was wrong.

Slide1 Slide2 Slide3Ummm…WOW!! Right?? I mean, even my HAIR changed colors! LOL! No but really, can you believe it?! Hardly any weight change, not much change in inches, but my BODY looks totally DIFFERENT!! Look at those guns! And where did my butt go? It almost makes me cry to see those muscles. If you don’t know me and don’t know how I used to be — I was the wimpy girl! I couldn’t do much of anything. No strength. No energy. No endurance. And now I have muscles! I love feeling strong. It’s amazing.

So here are my results. Real person, real teacher, real mom – spending just 25 minutes per day working out, 6 days per week. No pills, no crazy diets, not giving up all of the foods I love. Just eating and drinking in moderation and being consistent in what I do – drinking Shakeology every day and working out.

My 90 Day Results and Review of ChaLEAN Extreme

It’s over! I have completed my personal 90 day challenge of ChaLEAN Extreme. It is a three month program, and this past weekend marked the end of those three months. I am pretty happy with my results! Sorry for the poor picture quality. My phone wasn’t ready for all of this at 5:30 AM.

Slide1 Slide2 Slide3 Slide4So as you can see, I haven’t had any amazing transformation like what you might see on The Biggest Loser, but I have had some pretty awesome results! I lost a little over 10 pounds in 3 months — which may not sound like much, but when you know that muscle weighs more than fat, and I gained a LOT of muscle, 10 pounds is a pretty good number! I also lost inches all over my body. My clothes either fit much better or have gotten to be too big. I’m excited to have a reason to buy new clothes soon! My tummy is flatter, my shoulders are more defined, my booty is perkier and tighter than it was, and my thighs (my BIG problem area) have gotten smaller and more shapely! I’m not embarrassed to take my kids to the pool anymore. I’m not afraid of running in shorts (haha, inner thigh burn, anyone??). I don’t mind wearing tank tops all summer.

My body isn’t perfect. It probably never will be. But it is better and I am COMFORTABLE in my SKIN. I am proud of what I’ve accomplished – and I don’t just mean weight loss. I am proud of sticking with something for THREE WHOLE MONTHS!! I never thought I could do that, and I’m sure hubs didn’t believe me when I said I would try. I did it religiously, no excuses for skipping workouts except when we moved across the country. I increased my strength and now I can do work around the house and yard that I used to not be able (or willing) to do. I am seeing improvement and success in every area of my life. I have CONFIDENCE.

I ate clean foods probably 80% of the time. I definitely would’ve seen better results if I had watched my foods a little more closely, especially in this last month. I was a little too friendly with the wine and I let myself have some snackier foods that I should’ve done without. But I’m not mad about it! I just know what choices I have made that have given me the results I got instead of more of the muscle definition that I wanted.

So here’s what I think about ChaLEAN Extreme: This is listed as a workout for advanced fitness people, but I disagree. Yes, it’s tough. It was tough for me when I first started. I did a lot of pushing pause to catch my breath, especially during the cardio days (HIIT, what what!!!). I would yell talk loudly, grunt and groan, and I may have let a few choice words fly. Sorry I called you names, Chalene.

But the program itself is genius. It mixes weight training with cardio to perfection. It is a program that grows with you! So you can only do bicep curls with 3 pound weights? No problem! Do it. And then when that gets too easy, move up to 5 pounds. Or on the inverse of that – maybe you are a guy and you can curl 20 pounds. Super. Do it, and do it slowwwwlllyyyy, and when that’s too easy, increase it. And uh, whether you are a man or a woman, you are going to fall in love with Chalene. She’s motivating, inspiring, not annoying, super cute, and infectious.

Pairing CLX with Shakeology is just a winning combination. I have been able to keep my B12 levels up without giving myself weekly shots. I have felt energy that I didn’t have before, and I don’t crave as many sweets or bad foods as I did before. And knowing that I’m committed to this program has given me the FOCUS and DRIVE to push through it.

Now that I’m finished, I’ve been a little slack on exercising. I’m about to start running again, but eh…I haven’t wanted to get up and work out since my program is over. I like my coffee and PJs. I am still drinking my shakes, but I’ve relaxed a little bit in the carbs department. And you know what? My body is feeling it. Yesterday I felt like poo all day and even fell asleep on the couch. My body is telling me that what I’m doing isn’t working for me. That only means one thing…

GOTTA GET BACK ON IT.

So I’m starting Focus T25 in less than two weeks!! I already have a couple of friends who have committed to doing it with me, and I couldn’t be happier! I’m even going to force my offspring to work out with me, mwahahahaha. I’m the best mom EVERRR. And she is going to LOVE IT!!
