I Am Thankful

Just some brief, random thoughts as I sit and reflect on this quiet Sunday morning…

I am thankful for my family, that I have them here with me daily.
I am thankful for my home that I was in the process of purchasing one year ago.
I am thankful for my health so that I can run and sweat and motivate others daily.
I am thankful for my job, which doesn’t even feel like work.
I am thankful for my friends and coach family for inspiring me to be who I am.

November is the month of Thanksgiving, and I just have so much to be thankful for each day. We often get caught up in life and forget to appreciate the small things. Take a few minutes to ask yourself… What are you thankful for today?

More Protein, Less Candy

That’s what I’m telling myself anyway. Protein is good, candy is bad — right? I mean, it is almost Halloween anyway. And the chocolate just seems to be staring me down every which way I turn.

Chocolate never listens to me.

Chocolate never listens to me.

Luckily, the friendly people at NuZest sent me some packets of protein to try (they must have heard of my struggle!) and I played around with some different recipes while I fought my chocolate craving.

The first recipe I tried was a mocha recipe with their cappuccino flavored protein powder. I had never tried coffee flavored protein before, and since I love ALL THE COFFEE, this one had to be first.

It's like a 50V battery... in a drink.

It’s like a 50V battery… in a drink.

I mixed about a cup of cold brew coffee with the cappuccino protein powder and a splash of milk. Threw in a few ice cubes and blended. The directions on the packet say to shake in a shaker bottle, but we all know how well I follow directions…

The flavor was great. Not gritty, no weird aftertaste, and the best part — the ingredients list is very short. This is possibly the cleanest protein I’ve tried so far. The shake ended up being “frostier” than I like, which sometimes happens when I blend protein with just liquid and ice. I predicted adding fruit to a shake would help with that, and I was right.

The next recipe I tried was with the smooth vanilla flavor. I added some orange juice and a very ripe banana, plus a little ice. Oh yeahhh, that gave me the smooth consistency I like. The flavor was amazing. Like an orange dreamsicle without all the extra calories and junk ingredients.

Finally, I decided to step outside of the box with the chocolate protein powder and make a snack instead of a shake. My kiddos love “energy balls” and I was thrilled to be able to make a snack for them that didn’t have extra weird ingredients.

I mixed one packet of NuZest rich chocolate  protein, 1/4 cup rolled oats, 1/4 cup crunchy peanut butter, and 1 Tbsp honey in a bowl and stirred until the spoon was no longer effective. Then I used my hands to mash it all together and form little balls of yumminess.

These won’t last long at all…

My completely un-uniform method of rolling out these energy balls ended up making about 10 bites. That’s just enough for us to snack on for one day. Normally I would double or triple the recipe and save some for later. I would also refrigerate them so the peanut butter and honey became a little more solid… But when your snack smells and tastes this good, you just skip the whole refrigeration step. 😉

Thanks to NuZest for allowing me to try out this tasty, clean, vegan, soy-free protein! I am always looking for a great protein product to try since I don’t typically eat a lot of meat. This is a great protein powder, and one I would highly recommend! If you want to check out NuZest protein for yourself, head over to their website. They have a lot more recipes, and their own version of energy balls as well. 😉

Happy We Are a #FitFamily!

For the last four weeks, the Sweat Pink community teamed up with BOSU to show the world what it means to be #BOSUStrong. One thing that makes me BOSUStrong is my family because they inspire me to keep pushing no matter what. And I hope to inspire them to be the healthiest versions of themselves, physically and mentally.

Arien, Hunter, Kaiden, and I love to exercise and eat healthy together! We cook delicious meals on week days, and take advantage of the weekends to run or do workouts at home together! I introduced Kaiden to running with the Healthy Kids Running Series and love watching Hunter dance with me when we do CIZE together. Any time we lift weights with Body Beast or 21 Day Fix, Kaiden amazes me with the weights he can lift and the number of pushups he can do! A family that sweats together, sticks together! And stinks together too. 😉

Oh yeah, we got Beasty!

Oh yeah, we got Beasty!

Our favorite #FitFamily BOSU workout is balancing activities because balance is so important for spatial awareness in kids, as well as building core strength. And I am loving the BOSU Sport and the BOSU Sport-Kids DVD because its a great workout for my kid and has helped with their motivation and love for exercise.

We are so excited to have the opportunity to try the new BOSU Sport, a smaller version of the BOSU Balance Trainer (the Sport is 50 cm while the Balance Trainer is 65 cm)  that’s absolutely perfect for kids.  Now, the whole family can “BOSU” together!

That’s why we are a #BOSUStrong #FitFamily!

The new BOSU® Sport-Kids DVD encourages kids to have lots of fun while they get fit, strong and flexible! This total body fitness program, created by renowned trainer Brett Klika, targets 6 – 12 year olds and teaches kids that when you exercise your heart, lungs and muscles every day, you can be fit for life. The 60 minute DVD includes five BOSU® workouts, plus warm-up and cool-down, focusing on different components of fitness. Segments can be used individually or linked together for longer workouts. Check out the BOSU SPORT-Kids DVD: http://www.bosu.com/bosu-sport-kids-dvd. Get it for FREE when you purchase a BOSU Sport using the code: BOSUSWEATPINK15.

Lastly, get excited because BOSU just launched two new workout DVDs: BOSU Total Body Basics http://www.bosu.com/bosu-total-body-basics-dvd / and BOSU Core Basics http://www.bosu.com/bosu-core-basics-dvd. Get ONE of these 2 these downloads for FREE when you purchase a BOSU Balance Trainer using the code:BOSUSWEATPINK15.

My Schwinn Cycle Certification Experience

Just yesterday, I told my boyfriend I didn’t know how or when I became the person I am today. I used to have ZERO interest in fitness, I drank coke for breakfast, and hit up McDonald’s multiple times per week. I was skinny but so unhealthy. And I was so shy and socially awkward that I was even too afraid to call and order pizza or ask the movie store if the new hot summer hit was available for rental.

So much great information packed into this one day!

Somehow, all of that changed. And today I added yet another fitness certification to my collection  — today I because a Schwinn Indoor Cycle Coach.

Honestly, I’ve only taken a cycle/spin class a few times. And that’s mostly because when I did try it, my butt was sore for a week, so I was afraid to try it again! Apparently they make padded shorts for that, but I still don’t own a pair. Interestingly enough, I completed my nine hour training today that included two bike rides and my booty didn’t even fall off! Maybe it had something to do with learning how to properly adjust the positioning of my bike… something instructors never taught me before.

So the day started with a LOT of learning. Learning about the parts of the bike, how to do a Quick Fit and a Performance Fit for class participants, and a little hands on practice adjusting the bike. Apparently I’ve been working out too much, because I turned the resistance knob one too many times and broke my partner’s bike. Oops.

The bike I accidentally Hulk-smashed. The pieces that fell out of it are sitting on the seat, haha. Oops, sorry Life Time Fitness!

Getting my learn on from Master Trainer Skip Jennings

After the bike breaking incident, we learned more and more and more about bikes and cycling and class design. Aahh! So much to take in, but it was all SO informative! Seriously, there wasn’t a moment in this class where I felt like my time was wasted.

We ended the morning session with a one hour cycle class. I was really nervous about it. As I said, I hadn’t really had the best experiences with cycling in the past because it just hurt my butt so bad! And I remember my legs being really sore as well, which is something I didn’t need to happen because I am teaching INSANITY tomorrow morning. In the end, it was a GREAT workout and I really enjoyed it! The hour seemed to go by super fast, probably because of the music and the great coaching from Skip. 😉

Then…lunch happened. All you see in this picture was gone in less than 15 minutes. And that included some texting while chewing bites of food.

I regret nothing.

We finished up the day talking about how to make our classes truly an enjoyable experience for our participants, and I really learned a lot of things that I can incorporate into all of my fitness classes. Motivation, ways to connect with others, music ideas to use. Ohhhh, music is truly my favorite part of a workout. One song can strongly affect my level of motivation, even when I feel like I have no energy left. This remix of “Run This Town” was one we listened to during our second workout today and I LOVE IT! Unfortunately I can’t find it on iTunes or Spotify, so if you happen to find it, please leave a comment or message me and let me know! I really want to add this to my running playlist while I train for the Colfax Half Marathon.

So here I am, freshly certified and fully exhausted. I’m excited to put what I’ve learned into practice so I will be ready to sub some classes and one day lead my own!

Thanks a Lot , Cancer!

First let me clarify – I do not have cancer. I’m 35 years old, with a very healthy body. I’m the mom of two healthy, smart, active kids. We rarely get sick, even with a cold, and if we go to the doctor it’s for a check-up more often than anything else.

But cancer keeps popping up into my life, and frankly, I’m getting real tired of cancer’s crap.

In 2004, my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. He had been sick for a while, and was admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of pneumonia. He was treated and released to go home, but he knew something wasn’t right so he went to a different hospital to get a second opinion. After about two weeks in the hospital, his lung cancer was confirmed. Two weeks later, he was gone. Chemo wasn’t even an option for him because the doctors knew it would take him from us faster than the cancer would.

This was the last picture I took with my dad in September 2004.

This was the last picture I took with my dad in September 2004.

Losing him so quickly, without time to really feel like I could say goodbye, was hard. Devastating. I miss my dad a lot, and I’m sad that he wasn’t around long enough to ever meet Kaiden. Even Hunter was so young that she doesn’t remember my dad much. He would have been so proud of both of them, but because cancer took him from me when he was only 54 years old, he never got the opportunity to see them grow up.

And now….stupid cancer is trying to take my mom away from me too.

My mom and Hunter, Summer 2002

My mom and Hunter, Summer 2002

At 57 years old, my mom was just diagnosed with ovarian, cervical, and uterine cancer. At this point, I don’t have many more details than that, but it’s enough to piss me off. I’m scared, yes. I worried while waiting for the diagnosis to be confirmed, and I cried with fear and helplessness when I got the call. But now that I’m moving beyond crying about it, I’m just mad. Mad that this is happening to someone I love. Mad that I’m not there to help her while she is hurting, emotionally and physically. Mad that she could possibly be gone before she has the chance to see Hunter and Kaiden grow and graduate from high school. Mad that I may have another child later that she would never meet.

And yet….I feel like I should thank cancer for what it has done to my life. Because of this situation, I am working to take all of these emotions and turn them into something more positive. I am not going to let cancer win, not in my life and not in my mom’s. I’m going to be with her as she undergoes surgery next weekend to try to remove as much of the cancer as possible, and I’m going to help her from afar as much as I can while she gets chemo. I’m going to stay positive and I’m going to focus on the time we DO have together, rather than worry more about the time we may lose. I am going to find ways to enjoy time with my mom and do what I can to make her life even better.

At home, I’m already becoming more aware of my children and the little time I have with them each day after school. When they want to tell me some long story that seems to have neither a point nor an end (I know you mamas can relate to that!), I remind myself to patiently listen to what they have to say. Who knows when our time together could be gone? It’s so easy to take life for granted and not be conscious of all the blessings we have. It’s so easy to waste precious time and worry about work or bills or cleaning or so many other insignificant things that don’t really matter. But because of cancer taking my dad and now threatening my mom’s life, I’m realizing what matters the most:

Staying #BOSUStrong!!

This week is the very last week of the #bosustrong challenge that has inspired me to seek more balance in my workouts and my life. Before starting the challenge, my goal was to incorporate the BOSU in most of my workouts and now that we’re in the final week I plan to stick to my plan and stay #BOSUStrong all week!

This week we’re focusing on the things that make us BOSUStrong. Here are the 10 things that make me #BOSUStrong:

I am motivated to do my best.
I will always be healthy inspiration to others.
I never quit.
I do what makes me happy.
I love to teach fitness to encourage others to sweat happy.
I am inspired to learn new ways to teach and inspire others.
I love to encourage others to push themselves to do things they didn’t realize they were capable of doing.
I have a strong support system of my own.
I am proud of my challengers, my fellow coaches, and my family.
I hope to be able to maintain balance in my workouts and in my life.

Six Ways I Stay Balanced in Life

If you forgot to join me last week for the #BOSUStrong challenge or just weren’t up for the cardio, make sure you join me this week as it’s all about the balance! We’re standing on one leg, lunging, and squatting our way through the week.

But balance means more than just being able to stand on one leg, it also means being able to do what you love while making healthy choices at the same time. It means putting in the work and still finding time for rest and recovery. Or eating the veggies and protein but balancing it out with cheese fries.

Is butter a carb?

Is butter a carb?

Here are the 6 ways I stay balanced – what are yours?

  • I make time for myself by scheduling fun time alone and date nights with my sweetie.
  • My favorite me time is a glass of wine and a hot bath – especially after a hard workout.
  • My rule when it comes to a balanced diet is if it fits your macros, eat it.
  • I make fitness a priority by scheduling it rather than trying to fit it in.
  • When I get stressed or overwhelmed, my go to is running or lifting heavy with LOUD music in my ears.
  • I do share chores as well as fun activities to help my family stay balanced.

So I want to know – are you #BOSUStrong? Copy and paste the above, fill it in and make it your own and then tag me in it and share with your friends! Let’s all be #BOSUSTRONG.

Top 5 Reasons to Run the Colfax Half Marathon

Colfax half marathon

It’s official! I just submitted my registration for the 2016 Colfax Half Marathon in Denver, Colorado! I’m pretty excited to get out there next spring and hit the road in my city! Don’t you want to join me? Here are a few reasons why you should:

What's better than JUST running the Colfax? Running with this sweaty girl right here!

What’s better than JUST running the Colfax? Running with this sweaty girl right here!

  1. You’ll get to race with me. I mean really — I’m pretty much the coolest Colfax Ambassador there ever was. What could be better than that? If you live in the Denver/Aurora area, you can even go on some training runs with me and some other race fanatics. And you’ll most likely finish with a faster time than I will, so you’ll feel really good about yourself. I could just end the list here, as racing with yours truly should be reason enough to do it, but I’ll be a good sport and add a few extra reasons. Just because.
  2. You get to run through the Denver Zoo. The Colfax Half Marathon is the only race that runs through the Denver Zoo! Can you imagine the elephants and sheep cheering you on as you run? I promise you, if an elephant trumpets as me as I’m running, I’m going to trumpet right back. Check out the zoo route on this map.
  3. You can run for charity. I personally plan to run for Special Olympics Colorado. It was tough to decide, but with my background in Special Education and all of my past involvement with Special Olympics, I felt like it was the best match for me right now. I’m happy to be able to support them even though I’ve left the classroom.
  4. The Colorado Firefighter Calendar models will cheer you on. The race actually travels though a fire station in Aurora, and the super hot firefighters are there to cheer you on at the finish in City Park. You guys know Ryan Gosling is a strong motivator for me, but I think these firemen will do in a pinch. I’m pretty confident that I won’t be walking as I pass by them!! (Like what you see? Take them home with you! In a calendar, of course. Proceeds benefit Childrens Hospital Colorado and Burn Camps Program.)
If running the race doesn't get me hot, these guys sure will.

If running the race doesn’t get me hot, these guys sure will.

    5. There will be BBQ and beer! In addition to perks like a sweet tech race shirt, a finisher medal, free runner tracking, and race photos, you also get Jim ‘n Nick’s BBQ at the afterparty! And did we say beer? Yep, Michelob Ultra for race participants over 21 to quench that dry throat you’re certain to have after running 13.1 miles.

Once you sign up, head over to my Facebook page and leave me a comment! I’d love to be able to cheer you on, even if it’s virtually. So many workouts, not enough time and energy…

Well this is a problem I never thought I’d have.

I actually have MORE workouts that I want to do, and not enough time or energy to do them all! I’ve been practicing my PiYo workouts as well as teaching live classes, and while those workouts are great, they really take a lot of time! Not to mention, they exhaust me. I burn about as many calories doing a PiYo workout as I do with an INSANITY workout. No joke.

Disgustingly sweaty after just 45 minutes of PiYo. #piyoproblems

I love to run and I want to be able to hit the pavement 2-3 times per week, but I just can’t seem to get out there during the week! I’m never going to prepare for my half-marathon if I don’t work in some 3 mile runs soon. I want to start prepping for INSANITY and P90X Live classes that I will start teaching soon, but I also want to be able to lift my weights so I can work on my OWN goals of getting lean and sexy.

Have you ever tried to do burpees or Death Stars after a heavy leg day? It isn't pretty.

Have you ever tried to do burpees or Death Stars after a heavy leg day? It isn’t pretty.

The only solution I can think of for this problem is to just schedule my workouts a month at a time. As my body gets used to running, teaching PiYo weekly, and adding in some strength days here and there, I think I will be able to fit my personal workouts in with my classes and not worry about over-training. The best thing about PiYo is that it’s a great complement to both running and strength training, as it increases flexibility and builds core strength and balance. And with ZERO impact, it doesn’t add to the wear and tear of my body!

Gettin' sexy and flexy

Gettin’ sexy and flexy

As I get closer to my race date – which isn’t until May 2016, so I have plenty of time – I’ll gradually cut back on some of my cardio workouts and just focus on running, strength, and stretching. At least… in my head… it sounds like a good way to plan.

Do you have any tips for working on multiple fitness goals at once? How do you ensure balance and avoid overtraining injury?

Do you want to try PiYo at home? Join in my next challenge group and I will support you!
